Find out what the baggage fees are before you pay for your ticket. No more surprises. All airline fees are spelled out HERE.
Kayak has organized a table of airline fees from all the major carriers from Air Canada to Virgin America. You can see “at a glance” the fees for checked baggage, meals, pets, unaccompanied minors, seat assignments, and leg room. The airline fees are specified for each way of your trip.
Kayak is a fantastic resource from the co-founders of Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia. It is free to use and should be bookmarked for future reference.
Compare hundreds of travel sites at once to find the deal that’s right for you.
Kayak is updating the information as it changes and also provides a link to each carrier’s website. I am going to save it in the Travel Deals category on the home page of More With Less Today.
HERE is the Kayak spreadsheet for airline fees.
Here are some other options for comparing and lowering your baggage fees, accoring to the Wall St. Journal article by Jonnelle Marte, from July 25, 2010:
Check your credit-card loyalty programs. American Express Delta SkyMiles card holders can check the first bag for free on a Delta flight and can also be applied for up to 9 people traveling on your reservation. Continental Airlines waives baggage fees for certain Continental Chase credit cards.
Some airlines reduce your fees if you check in online. I recently did this with Delta and paid $23 with online check-in instead of $25 at the airport. Continental offers the same program. On August 1st, Spirit Airlines will be charging $19 for the first bag checked in on-line or $25 if you check the bag at the airport.
Some frequent flier programs will allow you to check your bags at no additional fee , for an annual fee. With United’s program, you pay $249 up front. Obviously, this would only be cost effective for very frequent fliers. Kimpton Hotels will give you a credit for up to $25 when you show proof of a charge for checking your 2nd bag.
Sometimes that bargain fare isn’t such a bargain when you factor in the extra fees. Don’t forget to check you bargain fare against SouthWest Airlines where “bags fly free.”
