It’s a tough job market for college students and recent graduates. Recently, a reader asked me about volunteering for AmeriCorps and I did some research. Here are the requirements and benefits and some valuable links:
AmeriCorps is government- sponsored and offers a modest wage (I am told around $800 per month). Full-time members who complete their service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school or to pay back a qualified student loan.
AmeriCorps consists of 3 main programs: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC.) Each one has slightly different requirements but are generally looking for adults ages 18-24. I am told that about 1 in 4 applicants are accepted. Allow about 3 months to apply to multiple open positions to increase your chances of being accepted into the program.
Here are a few needs you can meet:
Tutor and mentor disadvantaged youth
Fight illiteracy
Improve health services
Build affordable houses
Teach computer skills
Help communities respond to disasters
Time spent with AmeriCorps is more than a job. Each opportunity can make a difference in your life and the lives of those you will meet. You can email your questions to questions@americoprs.org or call 1-800-942-2677.
