Many states are beginning their “Cash for Appliances” rebate programs soon to coincide with Earth Day. HERE is the link to the energysavers.gov website page that explains the program in detail.
The Department of Energy has recommended that states consider rebates on the following appliances:
- Boilers
- Central air conditioners
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Freezers
- Furnaces (oil and gas)
- Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
- Refrigerators
- Room air conditioners
- Water heaters
Each state can set their own guidelines within the rules set by the Department of Energy for the money set aside for the ”kitchen clunkers”, “cash for appliances” program. The program ends when the money runs out. The program has 300 million dollars which is only one-tenth of what the “Cash for Clunkers” auto rebate program had available. Each state gets an amount of money that is proportionate to it’s population.
The expected rebate amounts will range from $50 – $250. The rebates can be combined with federal tax credits for the same product, as long as they meet the requirements of both programs. HERE is the link from energystar.gov that explains the “Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency” program for purchases through 2010.
HERE are the state by state guidelines from the energystar.gov website . Here are starting dates for several states:
