I wish I had seen this money- saving tip a month ago. I hope it helps you the next time your“Check Engine Light” comes on. My husband took my car right to the dealer, where coincidentally? a few other things needed to be repaired.
According to the article, many auto-parts stores, will do a diagnosis for free, using a hand-held machine. This will at least give you an idea of what the problem is. You can also buy the basic diagnostic tool for yourself. I found one on Amazon.com
Advance Auto Parts (stores in 40 states) and AutoZone (except California) as two auto-parts stores offering free diagnostic checks. After you determine what the problem is, visit this site that I found called RepairPal to get a free repair quote that compares the average price for this repair in your area. The use an estimator based upon your zip code, make and model of your car and the repair that is needed.
This will give you the information you need before you take the car to your mechanic.
