Cut Energy Costs

Our electric bill has dropped since I began washing and drying clothes in the off-peak hours. Here are a few more tips from Consumer Reports, Shopsmart Winter 2007.

About 90% of the energy used toward washing a load of clothes goes toward heating the water. Cut your heating costs by using your washer’s cold water setting with detergents such as Tide Cold Water or Cheer Dark Formula.

For your dishwasher, stop pre-rinsing which can waste 20 gallons of heated water a day. Simply scrape off the big chunks and use an enzyme detergent which gets off the stuck on food so you don’t have to scrub. Try Kirkland Signature from Costco or Great Value from Wal-Mart.

I live in a high rise that has a laundromat.

To save mondey I wash certain things by hand in my sink and hang them up to dry. I wash jeans and pants etc. in the washer since wringing them out by hand is a chore that I don’t feel like putting myself thru and I also hang these up to dry.

Drying things in this manner saves a few pennies and also gives a nice fragrance to my apartment.
