Kindle vs Nook-Price Wars

Amazon.com and Barnes & Nobleare fighting over who will have the lowest price on eReaders.

eReaders are still the hot gift to buy. Here is a comparison of the most popular models in stores now according to Woman’s Day Magazine, May 2011.

Favorite – the Kindle from  Amazon.com . The Kindle has a month-long battery life and access to Amazon’s giant eBook selections, including many for free. There are three models to choose from.

New discounted Kindle -the price is $114.  The new discounted Kindle has ads that show up on the home page and the screen saver, not while you are reading.  It is also smaller, lighter, (only 8.5 oz), faster and has 50% better contrast than the $139 Kindle 2 model. The new Kindle has 4GB of internal storage and can hold 3,500 books and documents, built-in wireless, text to speech (your Kindle can read to you), Whispersync ( a bookmark feature), PDF support, USB connectivity, and a battery life of up to one month when it is turned off.

Amazon will also be providing ads to promote their products such as a $20 gift card for only $10, six Audible eBooks for $6 and more.  There are already over 21,000 reviews for the product. You can read what users are saying before you decide.

Amazon always has a collection of free eBooks for you to download. You can view them here: Free eBooks to Download

The Kindle without the ads-  Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6″ Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation) $139 and the 3G version is $189.

Barnes & Noble NOOK and NOOK Color – The color display is great if you read magazines or Children’s Books. It is heavier than most eReaders and the battery has an 8 hour life. The Nook has a unique feature where you can lend eBooks to a friend. There are over 2 million books to download wirelessly in seconds and an extra-long battery life. Did you know that you can read free ebooks on your Nook at Barnes & Noble for one hour each day?

The newest Nook now comes with a color screen, PC World called it “the Cadillac of eReaders” and it retails for $249. The price of the basic Nook is $139.

The All-New Nook! The Simple Touch Reader just for $139 – Buy Now at BarnesandNoble.com!

There are two ways to get the NOOK for a little bit less, otherwise the price through B&N remains fixed. You can create a free account at  eBates , and then click on Barnes & Noble. It is simple, free, and you can take advantage of rebates on all of your other online shopping with no forms to fill out. You will get a check in the mail once a quarter. With  eBates, you will get a  6% rebate and  $5.00 for a new account when you make your first purchase. Plus you will get free shipping on your Nook. The NOOk is always excluded from Barne’s and Nobles coupon offers, but you still get the 6% rebate through eBates.

You can get a certified, refurbished Nook for less through Buy.com. You can view them here: Certified Pre-Owned Nooks and accessories now available at Buy.com starting at just $99! Shop now!

Here is an article I read from Digital Trends, comparing the Kindle to the Nook.  http://www.digitaltrends.com/gadgets/kindle-vs-nook-an-e-reader-face-off/2/

Just for fun, I looked at the prices of the ebooks on both Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com  and they were exactly the same. I looked at current best sellers, so they must keep tabs on each other’s prices.

The others….

The KOBO Wireless eReader – lowest price I found was $129.99 at Walmart. It can also be purchased at Borders. This eReader offers a 6″ display and wireless access to the KOBO eBook Store. The 4-way controller pad can be frustrating to use. I recommend testing out in stores first.

The Sony Readers – $229 at www.sonystyle.com. The Touch Edition PRS-650 PC has a touch screen that is easy to navigate. The price is higher than many and it does not have Wi-Fi which means books have to be loaded via computer. The Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350PC, $179 at www.sonystyle.com, is compact without sacrificing readability. It is small enough to fit inside your purse. It also has no Wi-Fi, so your ebooks must be downloaded by computer. In my opinion, the Wi-Fi feature is a must have. My daughter has a Kindle and books are downloaded with just a click. That is a huge  part of the joy of owning an eReader. Both Sony eReaders qualify for free ground shipping.

If you have a frugal friend or two, help me grow by telling them about MWLT. I sincerely appreciate it when my readers help me by sharing deals!
