Make Your Own Cleaning Products and Save Money

Make your own cleaning products and save money. It’s easy and safe for your family and pets.

Today’s guest post is from Stephanie at  http:savingmoneyismyjob.blogspot.com. Stephanie has a beautiful blog with helpful photos and she has been saving money by making her own homemade cleaning products. Here are some of her favorites:

Home Made All Purpose Cleaner
I found this “recipe” for Home Made All Purpose Cleaner and have been pretty impressed with it. I am a big fan of using vinegar to clean with but my hubby can’t stand the smell so this is the perfect compromise! (I still use a mixture of half vinegar and half water to clean windows and mirrors)

What you will need to get started

White Vinegar (I buy in bulk at Sam’s)
Borax
Mild Dish Soap – this helps “mask” the vinegar smell
A clean, empty 16oz spray bottle
An easy to pour from bowl or cup
A liquid measuring cup – measuring up to 1 cup
A Tablespoon
A Teaspoon

In your pourable cup or bowl add the following
1 Teaspoon Borax
2 Tablespoons Vinegar
Mix well – till Borax is dissolved – add
1 cup warm water

Carefully pour into your spray bottle
Add enough water till you almost reach 16 oz then add
1/8 cup mild dish soap
HINT: If you have really hard water – use distilled water
Screw on the lid and give it a shake!

Don’t forget to label it and you are set!

I think it has been figured out to cost you about $.31 and about 5 minutes to make a 16 oz bottle of this Home Made All Purpose Cleaner – compare that to the cost of store bought cleaners and the time you spend choosing one – totally worth it!
And if you are worried about whether or not it cleans well just do a little research for yourself on the benefits of cleaning with vinegar – I am very confident that it is doing a good job for me.

Homemade “Soft Scrub”
I found another great money saving idea – how to make your own “soft scrub” type cleaner.

I mixed up a 1/2 a cup to clean my kitchen double sink. I was really impressed at how shiny it was after! It also has no chemical smell – I did not even wear rubber gloves!

The “recipe” is so simple……

In a bowl add equal parts of baking soda and dish soap

Mix well – pour onto surface – rub it in and rinse it off well – that is it!

I only make enough for what I need at that moment – don’t know what would happen if you made a large batch and saved it? It is so easy to mix it up though….

 Homemade OxyClean

1 cup water
1/2 cup peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda

Mix together and soak laundry in it for 20 minutes to overnight and then wash as usual. Or you can just skip the water and pour the peroxide and baking soda directly into the wash with your laundry soap and wash as usual.

I have been wanting to try making my own cleaning products myself. It is a great way to save money and to not to have all those noxious chemicals around food and kids.

I’m glad I found Stephanie from savingmoneyismyjob  to be my guide.

Here in southern California, our water is hard and I do not have a water softener. I purchased a new dishwasher last August and in a few months, the inside was caked with a white mineral  deposit and my dishes and glasses were filmy and always looked dirty.

I discovered Borax which I purchased for $4.00 for a large box. I now add it to my dishwasher soap as a half & half mixture. It has made a tremendous difference. The inside of the dishwasher tub looks brand new. I also mix the Borax into my laundry powder. It is a great cleaner and a great dollar stretcher.
