Exciting 9/28 update:

Today, Amazon dropped the price of a new Kindle to $79. This is the Kindle that comes with ads built in. The ad free version of the Kindle is priced at $109. You can buy a deeply discounted Kindle today Here is the direct link. They are in stock and will ship out right away.

Old news…….Amazon has lowered the price of the Kindle by $25. The price of the discounted Kindle is $114, down from $139. You can pre-order one now for delivery on or around May 3rd.

There is a catch. The new discounted Kindle will have ads that show up on the home page and the screen saver, not while you are reading. Amazon refers to the new discounted Kindle as having special offers and sponsored screensavers. It is also smaller, lighter, (only 8.5 oz), faster and has 50% better contrast than the $139 Kindle 2 model. The new Kindle has 4GB of internal storage and can hold 3,500 books and documents, built-in wireless, text to speech (your Kindle can read to you), Whispersync ( a bookmark feature), PDF support, USB connectivity, and a battery life of up to one month when it is turned off.

Initial sponsors to sign on are Buick, Chase, Olay and Visa. Amazon will also be providing ads to promote their products too. Amazon will offer a $20 gift card for only $10, six Audible eBooks for $6 and more. My opinion is that we are de-sensitized to ads because they are everywhere. I would buy the cheaper version as long as I wasn’t seeing the ads while immersed in a good book. Having them on the home page or screen saver probably would not bother me.

We purchased a Kindle for my daughter’s high school graduaton gift a few years ago. She loves it and uses it often. We paid a lot more than $114, ouch.
