Pinterest: What is it, and how do I use it?

Natalie’s Pinterest Creation

I know that lately, a lot of people have been talking about the latest craze: Pinterest. Let me be the first to say that it is worth the hype, although if you are a full time student with two part time jobs, it may not be the most effective way to utilize your limited free time. However, I have found the projects that I’ve adapted from the site have been incredibly therapeutic, useful, and easy to do on a budget.

Let me back up a minute. Pinterest is not a social networking site, although you can follow your friends (easily accessible through Facebook and other sites). Pinterest is a virtual pinboard, which allows you to keep beautiful and interesting things that you find on the internet. You can organize them according to category, and get ideas and inspiration from people who have the same interests as you do. A “pin” is simply a picture, of a recipe, a craft project, a hairstyle, etc., and it links back to the website that it came from, making it easy to get your name out there if you happen to run a blog of your own, (like my Mom- shameless plug for More With Less Today).

Some examples of the categories I’ve created for my own Pinboards include Wedding Ideas (which I share with my friends, a few of whom are planning, rather than dreaming of weddings of their own), Recipes to Try, Craft Projects, Apartment Decor, and so forth.

I have tried a few things that I’ve found, with many others on my to-do list. I’ve made a Green Power Smoothie that I’ve frozen in a muffin tin, and now each time that I want one, instead of getting out all of the ingredients, I take the already made frozen smoothie cups and put it in the blender with some coconut water. I’ve also made a magnetic makeup board for all of my eyeshadow, making it much easier to play around with different colors, and also saves a lot of space and time. I’ve also found a homemade iced coffee recipe that makes the best coffee/cream combination ever, my roommates cannot seem to keep their hands off of it.

These are just a few examples of the wonder of Pinterest, you really can make it your own–share it or keep it to yourself, and whether it’s just for fun or to really get your hands dirty and start creating, it’s a great site and I definitely recommend it.
