*This info was for 2010 – Many states have no state sales tax shopping days coming up soon. This is the ideal time to do your back to school shopping .  Here is the list that I have compiled so far: If you know of any others, please leave me a comment so I can update the list for everyone.

Each state has specific eligibility requirements, too numerous and detailed to mention. Search “your state” + 2010 tax free shopping days for the specific exemptions in your state (or your neighboring state if it is worth the trip.) In general, most states will allow exemptions for clothes and shoes under $100.

*All dates are for 2010

 

Alabama – August 6-8, 2010 applies to clothing under $100, school supplies under $50, books under $30 and computer equipment under $750.
 

Connecticut – August 15-21, 2010 applies to clothing and shoes under $300.

Florida – August 13-15, 2010 applies to books, clothing and shoes $50 or less and back to school supplies under $10.

Illinois – August 6-15, 2010 does not apply to computers, items are not exempt from county & city sales tax. 

Iowa – August 6-7, 2010 applies to clothing & shoes under $100

Louisiana-not confirmed yet

Maryland- August 8-14, 2010

Mississippi – July 30-31, 2010 applies to clothing and shoes under $100

Missouri – August 6-8, 2010 applies to clothing under $100, school supplies under $50, computer software under $350, computer equipment under $3,500. Not all cities and counties are participating.

New Mexico – August 6-8, 2010 applies to all clothing and shoes under $100, school supplies under $15, computers under $1,000 and computer equipment under $500.

New York – Exempt from state sales tax of 4% all year for clothing and shoes under $110.

North Carolina – not released yet

Oklahoma- August 7-9, 2010 applies to clothing and shoes under $100

South Carolina – August 6-8, 2010 applies to clothing, accessories, shoes, school supplies, computers, and computer equipment.

Tennessee – August 6-8, 2010 applies to clothing and school supplies under $100 and computers under $1,500.

Texas – August 20-22, 2010 applies to clothing and shoes under $100 and includes backpacks, also includes layaway items.

Virginia – August 6-8, 2010 applies to clothing and shoes under $100 and school supplies under $20.

West Virginia – not released yet

Also, most states allow us to shop at Amazon.com anytime with no sales tax. Often their prices are the best and when you shop without the kids, you always save $$. Take advantage if you can, as states are looking at changing this to raise more revenue.

You WILL need to pay state sales tax in these 5 states.
