To celebrate summer fun, Redbox is asking moms, What movie meant for kids do you secretly love to watch?”Revealing my answer to the question also reveals my age. My favorite kids movie that I secretly love to watch is “Rodgers and Hammersteins Cinderella” from 1965, starring an angelic Lesley Ann Warren.
If this movie were playing on my DVD player, I would stop all activity and be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I took a few minutes this morning to think about why I love this old movie so much and I came up with several reasons.
It harkens back to a simpler time of movie watching without fancy special effects and “over the top” scenes.
Leslie Ann Warren modeled poise, dignity, and faith as she performed her daily duties as Cinderella without whining, griping, or shrillness. She rose above her circumstances.
The Rodgers and Hammerstein songs were so catchy and memorable. A particular favorite is still “In My Own Little Corner” which speaks to our need for optimism and imagination.
Another favorite song is “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” This song reminds us that beauty comes from the inside and if you are merely beautiful on the outside, then you are not beautiful at all. Do any of the Housewives of… TV reality shows come to mind?
As an empty-nester Mom enjoying summer with my college-age daughter home for the summer, I recommend renting Redbox movies and having family nights watching classic movies as often as you can. I never dreamt that the years would pass so quickly.
